Calvary Monument Bible Church is an independent, non-denominational Bible church which began as “The Monument Church” in 1885. Built by the Eckert family to serve the spiritual needs of the men working in the nearby nickel mines, the church was named for the large marble monument that marked William Eckert’s grave in the adjacent cemetery.
The church was used by a number of congregations through its early years, finally incorporating as “Calvary Monument Bible Church” in 1953. Pastor Clarence Lefever served CMBC for 45 years, beginning in 1932. From 1975 to 1977, Ken Wilcox served as senior pastor following Clarence Lefever's retirement. Pastor Bob Reid has been CMBC’s senior pastor since 1979. Since its incorporation in 1953, Calvary Monument has had only three senior pastors. For more information on the church’s leadership, see the Pastoral Staff page on this site.
